Aims at   

Ø       Acquainting the students with the various aspects of information, knowledge and communication and their role in the society;

 

Ø       Enabling the students to understand and appreciate the place and functions of different types of libraries and information centers in the changing social and educational environment;

Ø      Equipping the students with the basic skills in the routine operations associated with library and information work;

Ø     Giving students a detailed knowledge relating to national and international information systems and techniques of designing various types of information systems.

Ø      Acquainting the students with various facets of information technology and to make them proficient in using the IT devices for the routine operations in a library

Ø       Equipping the students in research methods and research methodology.

Scheme of the Course  

M L I Sc is a Credit and Semester Programme. It consists of 76 credits distributed among 14 courses in four semesters. The 4 semesters spread over two academic years. 64 credits are for core course and rest for electives. The scheme and detailed syllabus of each course are given below.

 DETAILED SYLLABUS

Number of Seats

 Total number of seats is 20. The seats will as far as possible be equally divided among B Sc degree holders and B A / B Com holders. Reservation of seats for SC/ST and Backward communities will be as per the rules in force in the University.

Mode of Training

The mode of training comprises lectures, tutorials, seminars, assignments, projects, library work, laboratory work, field training and study tour. To get qualified to appear for the end-semester examination, the students have to have not less than 75% attendance in each of the academic activities and complete the projects, assignments and other work assigned to them. 

Assessment and Evaluation

 

Performance of students in each course is assessed through a continuous internal assessment system and an end-semester examination. Each course carries 100 marks, out of which 40 are for continuous internal assessment. Attendance, performance in seminars and assignments, marks secured in mid-semester examinations and class tests and participation in extra-curricular activities are considered for the award of internal assessment marks. The end-semester examination carries 60 marks. The dissertation and viva voce carries 100 marks.  The minimum for a pass in each course is 50 marks, with a separate minimum of 25 marks in the end-semester examination. 

Classification of results will be made on the basis of weighted average score (W A) earned by a candidate. The weighted score in each course is the product of marks and the number of credits for the course. Weighted average score will be the sum of weighted scores divided by the total number of credits for all the courses. Classification of results will be as follows:

            W A = 80% or more -  Passed in First Class with Distinction

            W A = 60 to 79%     -  Passed in First Class

            W A = 50 to 59%     -  Passed in Second Class

            W A  < 50 %            -  Failed
